Chapter 506: 505 cannot be like that

Wen Jin stood in the room for a long time, and Wen Ran woke up suddenly when he was about to leave.

She opened her eyes, just in time to see Wen Jin leaving through the door. The room was shaded with curtains and the door was open, letting in some light. She scrunched her eyebrows, looking somewhat bewildered, and called out, “Brother!”

Wen Jin turned around, smiled at her, and returned to her bedside. He gently said, “When Xiaoxiao woke up, she couldn’t find you. She thought you had already gotten up. But then Auntie Li mentioned that she didn’t see you downstairs, so I came up to check. To my surprise, you were sleepwalking into this room.”

Wen Ran’s eyes flickered revealing a hint of unease on her face.

“You going to sleep again?”

Wen Jin noticed her expression and felt a slight prick of pain in his heart. He quickly changed the topic.

“I’m not going to sleep anymore.”

Wan Ran rubbed her eyes. Perhaps due to waking up in the middle of the night and having trouble falling back to sleep, she was feeling a bit uncomfortable.

“It’s still early. You can sleep some more.”

Wen Jin reached out and affectionately stroked her head. Wen Ran smiled, “I’ll get up and join you and Xiaoxiao for breakfast.”

“Sounds good, I’ll wait for you downstairs then.”

Wen Jin smiled, his gentle eyes lingering on her for a second before leaving the room.

Wen Ran got up and went to the window to look downstairs. The car that had been parked there overnight was now gone. Seeing the vacant spot, a corner of her heart felt empty.

After standing by the window for a few minutes, she tidied up her bed and went back to her own room to change clothes.

At 10 o’clock in the morning, Gu Kai called.

Wen Ran was watering the flowers in the yard with Bai Xiaoxiao. She put down the watering can and took out her phone to answer the call, “Ranran, the results are out!”

Gu Kai’s clear and cheerful voice came through the phone. His joy, heard by Wen Ran, made her heart sink.

“Compared to the last checkup, there’s some improvement… Ranran, this means the medication you’ve been taking is working. Yesterday, you didn’t bring any medicine. In a while, I’ll bring some more over to you. Dad said that you should continue with it.”

Wen Ran held the phone, somewhat lost in thought. Even after Gu Kai had finished speaking, she gave no response.

“Ranran, are you listening?”

Not hearing a response from her, Gu Kai called out worriedly. He quickly added, “What I’m saying is true. I’m not saying this just to comfort you.”

“Brother, I know you’re not lying to me,” Wen Ran said softly. However, she was scared by this outcome.

Thinking about the second possibility, her face turned pale. Bai Xiaoxiao who was standing beside her saw this and her eyebrows furrowed in worry.

Xiaoxiao couldn’t hear what Gu Kai was saying on the phone, but she could see that Wen Ran looked really bad.

“You should be happy about it. Even though the effect is not very significant, it’s a good sign. As long as you stay consistent and maintain a positive mindset, you’ll definitely get better.”

On the other end of the phone, Gu Kai couldn’t see Wen Ran’s face, but he could sense that she was not happy.

Wen Ran clenched her lips tightly and asked, “Brother, could you also arrange for Mo Xiuchen to have a check-up?”

“Mo Xiuchen? What kind of check-up does he need?”

Gu Kai didn’t understand her intention. The last time, they had tricked her into going for a check-up and had asked Mo Xiuchen to go along with her. Now, she was asking for Mo Xiuchen to have a checkup again, which he didn’t understand.

Wen Ran tightly clasped her phone, unable to explain her concerns to Gu Kai’s doubts.

Wen Ran answered going along with his assumption, deciding to believe it was like that. She didn’t want the result to be what she feared.

She had no knowledge about medicine. She didn’t know how much of what Fu Jingyi had said was true or false, but she did know that there’s more than one way for diseases to spread. She couldn’t not believe this.

After hanging up the phone, Gu Kai sat in his chair in a daze, repeatedly recalling Wen Ran’s tone of voice.

In the end, all he could confirm was that Wen Ran seemed hesitant and reluctant to speak— she was definitely hiding something from him.

Frowning, he got up and left his office to find his father in his office.

When he entered the office, Gu Yan had just finished a phone call. He sat down in the chair in front of his father’s desk and said, “Dad, I’ve just informed Ranran about the results.”

Upon hearing this, Gu Yan was somewhat emotional, “What did Ranran say?”

Gu Kai’s eyebrows furrowed, and he answered thoughtfully, “From the tone of Ranran’s voice, she doesn’t seem very happy.”

“Not happy? Did she think we were lying to her? I have to say, I was also surprised by these results. Initially, we didn’t have high hopes. Gu Kai was startled and asked instinctively, “Dad, what can’t it be?”

Gu Yan looked at his son but said nothing. His face was even paler than before. In his deep gaze, a myriad of emotions churned. Gu Kai stared at his father without blinking, not daring to ask any further, waiting for his reply.

“Ah Kai, have Mo Xiuchen make time for a checkup.”

After a long while, Gu Yan said wearily, not answering Gu Kai’s previous question.

“Dad, why? Have you figured something out?”

Gu Kai’s face changed, and his heart lurched. When Wen Ran had mentioned this earlier, he had assumed that she just wanted Mo Xiuchen to keep taking the medication with her.

But now his father was saying the same thing…

He wasn’t a fool. Even if he didn’t know what his father was thinking, he realized that Wen Ran’s improved condition might have something to do with Mo Xiuchen.

As to what that connection might be, he didn’t dare to speculate further. Nor did he hope that it was the fleeting guess that had crossed his mind!
