Chapter 662: Chapter 656: Energy Crisis (Part 2)
“Haha, come to think of it, this time I should thank you, Commander Davis. I have a favor to ask of you. Can you take me back to Earth, the planet where you found me? It’s not a problem, right?” Finn Lewis asked with a laugh.
“No problem, you’ve given me so many things, this favor is not a problem at all. But, why did you give me those things? Are you trying to woo me?” Jasmine Davis asked while spinning her eyeballs with a grin.
“Well, there’s not much to it. I bought those items out of spite, they’re useless to me, they will be better used by you. But I can’t give you the resource planet though, I still need that one.” Finn thought for a moment, then spoke frankly.
“I never wanted it. It’s of no use to me even if I did, I do not have the capability to exploit it. You keep it for yourself.” Jasmine nodded and simply said. However, she quickly glanced at Finn and added, “Let me make this clear though, even though the Blackwater Sect is reputable and the items they sell are free from tricky business, when it comes to resource planets, if you don’t exploit them, don’t blame me if others secretly do.”
Finn nodded. Jasmine didn’t explicitly mention it, but it was obvious something was afoot. But Finn didn’t mind because he originally intended to give that planet to Jasmine. He later changed his mind because upon examination, he found out that the ores were greatly beneficial for the Icarus Insect Species’ development. The whole planet could serve as an important base for the development of the Insect Species.
Unlike other places, this one is located in a region with quite a harsh environment. So there won’t be any issues if the Insect Species decide to develop there. No one will reach that location in a short time. Once the Insect Species have developed, anyone who tries to steal the mines should be prepared to be lost forever.
“Don’t worry, I got it under control,” Finn nodded and assured.
“Let’s go then. But who is this? Nice, you already found yourself a woman to play with.” Jasmine looked at the woman standing next to Finn and commented.
Finn, too lazy to explain, waved her off. “Stop gossiping. You’re a pirate leader, act like one. Why are you so interested in something like this? That’s not like you.”
Why the hell do you care about my style? Jasmine wanted to scream but decided to let it go. “Let’s get going, get on the ship. Although I can come here without much trouble, I can’t stay too long. It won’t be good if someone finds out,” she said, huffing and hurrying them along.
Finn nodded, then turned around and addressed Dunn Monty, “Then we’ll see you later. If anything comes up, you can contact me. You know how to reach me. Luna Starfield, record his contact details.”
“Recorded, your highness,” Luna Starfield’s voice echoed, not from the earpiece planted in Finn’s ear, but from the wristwatch on his wrist.
Although Dunn Monty is a mercenary, he used to be a soldier. He’s not good with words, he gave Finn a military salute from the Federation and left.
The small spacecraft refueled at the port and then departed from the Redglow Star port. After leaving the Redglow Star port, Jasmine told Finn, “It will take about three days to rendezvous with our fleet, and about fifteen days to reach Earth.”
Finn nodded, the problem mainly lay with Jasmine’s ship engine. It couldn’t perform a single jump covering such a long distance, plus, unless necessary, usual ships wouldn’t perform maximum light-year jumps. For example, if a ship uses 1 unit of energy to jump 1 light year, the energy consumed to jump 2 light years won’t be 2, but at least 2.4 units.
So if you jump too far in one go, the energy consumption would be terrifying. The energy usage of a spaceship is different from a car’s fuel consumption on Earth. A car can keep going as long as there’s fuel.
However, the energy used by spaceships, especially the energy for the jump engine, is needed for instantaneous outbursts. Hence, most spaceship jump engines are a combination of engines. For example, most Federation ship uses a ‘Subspace Super Quantum Collision Engine’, which relies on the collision of two types of quantum not yet discovered on Earth to produce energy similar to nuclear reactors, where a small amount of fuel can generate an enormous amount of energy.
This kind of engine also has another advantage, and the source of fuel can be captured directly from cosmic space. In theory, as long as the engine is not faulty, the spaceship engine can keep running indefinitely.
However, the fact that the engine can run indefinitely doesn’t mean it can jump indefinitely. When a spaceship jumps, even the current Federation engines cannot generate enough instantaneous energy to reach the jump threshold, so to jump, energy must be stored in advance and released all at once.
So many spaceships, at regular flight times, would equip their engines with super energy blocks. The engine replenishes energy to these blocks during flight, and during a spatial jump, the jump engine instantly draws sufficient energy from these blocks and the main engine, producing enough energy outburst to instantly open a jump channel and thus, perform the jump.
Herein lies the problem, the energy block reserves in a regular civilian spaceship’s jump engine has its limits, suppose they are worth 100. The most reasonable distance for a single jump is generally a fifth of the energy blocks. After completing a jump, the spaceship can directly perform a second jump once the jump engine cools down.
Therefore, once the spaceship completes 5 jumps, the initially depleted fifth of energy blocks would have recharged, establishing a continuous jumping cycle.
However, the maximum jumping distance of the spaceship jump engine is definitely not just a fifth. Even complete depletion in a single usage is possible. But then you would have to wait for a sufficiently long time because all of your energy would have been used up. This makes it impossible to have a continuous, cyclical usage time.
